EN471: 1994 Specification for High Visibility Warning Clothing

EN471 is a European standard for high visibility clothing.  It covers the performance of the conspicuous materials (both reflective and fluorescent) used in high visibility garments, together with specifications for minimum areas, placement of materials and labelling.

EN471 allows employers to ensure high visibility garments comply with the use of PPE Directive 89/656EEC covering the minimum health and safety requirements for the use by workers of PPE at the workplace, and the PPE Directive 89/686EEC which requires a CE mark to be affixed to all PPE.

Garments are categorised according to the level of conspicuity provided by minimum quantities of fluorescent and reflective materials.  Banks of retroreflective material must be not less than 50mm wide.

Class 3
Highest level of protection that must incorporate a minimum of 0.80 sq.m. background material, 0.20 sq.m. retroreflective material.

Class 2
Intermediate level of protection (0.50 sq.m. background material, 0.13 sq.m. retroreflective material).

Class 1
Lowest level of protection (0.14 sq.m. background material, 0.10 sq.m. retroreflective material).

The protection of people is the primary objective so compliance with EN471  is essential.  High visibility garments must comply when new and throughout their working lives.  Wear and tear, washing and storage cannot be allowed to compromise performance and put people at risk.  All the products offered have been tested to ensure that this is achieved.
